A NEW SOLID PHASE OF ETHANE, AND ITS VIBRATIONAL SPECTRA

Publisher:Ohio State University
We report the discovery of a solid phase in ethane, that does not seem to have been previously found. It is formed when ethane is deposited on a cold surface in vacuum, with suitable temperature control. The vibrational spectra of this solid, that are quite different from those of the other two solid phases, will be reported. Indications from the spectra suggest that the new phase is ordered, but irreversible transformation of the spectra from those of the new phase to those of the well known ordered solid shows that the new solid is metastable. The spectra of the metastable ordered solid will be presented, and possible crystal structures will be discussed.
