Abstract

This project, conducted in conjunction with a car manufacturing company, examines the future of back seat passengers' experiences. Vehicle interiors are predicted to evolve from the back seat we know today to another entirely new living space as cars begin transitioning to more autonomous models. Different types of people use the back seat for various purposes, and current solutions are failing to address their needs safely or efficiently. With the addition of tray tables to the back seat, passengers will have a greater degree of flexibility in deciding what they want their rear seat experience to be like, and it will gently introduce passengers to a new, more future focused way of riding in a vehicle. This concept for a rear seat tray is specifically designed with safety and flexibility in mind. It boasts a rotational design created specifically to move out of the way in the case of a head-on collision, and the ability to be adjusted for various types of users and their associated activities. Wireless charging allows for seamless and intuitive technology integration, and a silicon tray mat makes sure that everyone's belongings stay on the table as the vehicle moves, whether they're a small child's books and toys, to a working adult's laptop. When finished, the tables can be collapsed back into the center console for efficient storage.
