COLLISION-INDUCED INTERSYSTEM CROSSING IN CO

The decay times and relative yields of the CO fluorescence from individual vibronic levels have been studied as a function of the rare-gas (He, Ne, Ar, Kr) pressure using narrow-band excitation from the synchotron radiation source. The collisions induce reversible transitions between nearly degenerate singlet and triplet levels, the cross-sections for this process being much larger than those for a vibrational relaxation within each manifold. The dependence of cross-sections on the character of the vibronic levels (S-T coupling matrix elements, S-T energy difference, S-T mixing coefficients) and on the collision partner will be discussed. The reversible intersystem crossing (cross-relaxation) seems to be the main path for vibrational relaxation of the CO excited singlet states.
