Abstract
Exciton transitions have been computed for sixteen distinct cases of two- and three-dimensional arrays of chlorophyll a molecules. The arrays are distinguished by varying packing densities and by constraints applied to the orientation of each of the transition dipoles. Each array consists of 40 antenna chlorophyll a molecules and one P700 chromophore associated with the reaction center of photosystem I. Transition density interactions between antenna chlorophyll a and P700 ``pushes” the P700 band to lower energy while increasing or decreasing the dipole strength of the P700 band by as much as 50%. The various arrays are discussed in terms of their suitability as models for the arrangement of chlorophyll a in vivo.
