Bright, Jr. Issue Date: 1976 Publisher: Ohio State University Abstract: We have carried out microwave experiments analogous to high resolution optical experiments in which narrower lines are obtained via double photon processes in which the photons are traveling in opposing directions, thus reducing Doppler width. A pump frequency near the $J = O \rightarrow J = 1$ transition of OCS was amplitude modulated and the double resonance ""creeper"" was observed for the $J = 1 \rightarrow J = 2$ transition. At the pressures we observed (between 1 and 10 mTorr) there was a significant difference in the line width of the ""creeper"" depending on whether the pump and signal photons were directed in the same or in opposite directions. This appears to make an important contribution to the line width even in the pressure region where collisional relaxation usually dominates.
