Abstract

The nondegenerate Brillouin zone center internal optic modes which originate in a degenerate molecular mode whose degeneracy has been lifted through site group effects will be discussed. The site groups with a one dimensional irreducible representation to which two or three polarizations belong will give rise to an internal optic mode whose frequency and intensity are governed by dipolar interactions in those two or three polarization directions even though the mode can interact with electromagnetic radiation of only one particular polarization. The geometric representation and an analysis of these modes will be given for the $K_{2}SO_{4}$ crystal.
