Abstract: The infrared and Raman spectra of 1,4-cyclohexadiene and of 1,4-cyclohexadiene-$d_{8}$ have been obtained. The Raman spectrum of 1,4-cyclohexadiene reported earlier by Gerding and $Haak^{1}$ has been substantially confirmed. The infrared spectrum reported by these authors is not in good agreement with the results of the present research. It is concluded that 1,4-cyclohexadiene contains a center of symmetry, and that it therefore belongs to one of the point groups $C_{2h}$ or $D_{2h}$. It is not possible rigorously to distinguish these possibilities with the available data. As the evidence seems to favor $D_{2h}$, an assignment of the fundamental frequencies to the normal modes of vibration of the structure of $D_{2h}$, symmetry has been attempted. The assignment satisfies the Teller-Redlich product rule and is reasonably complete.
