Abstract

Abstract Project purpose and Questions The purpose of this project is to determine whether the institution of a standardized handoff form between the Department of Anesthesia and the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit (PACU) resulted in satisfaction with postoperative handoff communication at Akron General Medical Center (AGMC). Good communication between hospital departments is an important component of patient safety. Project Design This DNP project used a survey to answer the project question. A cross-sectional survey was administered to the anesthesia department and PACU staff approximately one year after the implementation of a newly developed handoff form. Setting The setting will be the PACU and The Department of Anesthesia at Akron General Medical Center, a 500 bed level one trauma center in the Akron area. Sample The sample will consist of up to 50 staff members within the Department of Anesthesia and approximately 30 RNs who are involved in postoperative handoff communication. Data Evaluation Descriptive evaluation of the quantitative responses (ordinal level data) was completed by the student and advisor including counts and ranges. Qualitative data were reviewed for content themes by the student and the advisor. The data was reviewed for general content as well as recurring themes and patterns. These themes provided suggestions on how to make handoff communication better and pinpointed the perceived barriers to effective communication.
