Title: Monument to the Kosovo Heroes (Spomenik Kosovskim junacima) -- unveiled on Vidovdan, 1904
Creators: Enich, Steven
Issue Date: 1988-04-01
Publisher: Ohio State University. Libraries
Description: Kruševac
The monument commemorates the centennial of the First Serbian Uprising (1804-1813). In 1882 the Principality of Serbia became the Kingdom of Serbia. The bas-relief present the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Serbia of 1888. The neoclassical sculpture is a sitting female figure -- a wreath of laurels on her head, a sword in her left hand, her right arm pointing south to Kosovo (still in the Ottoman empire at the time) -- is most likely an allegory of the Kingdom of Serbia, rather than "the Kosovo maiden" as some seem to call it.
