Abstract

Plant remains were common and well preserved at the Fort Ancient Philo Phase Richards and Philo II sites, Muskingum Co., Ohio. Maize and beans were probably the most important plant food source, supplemented by the gathering of hickory nuts and blackberries. Summer and fall activity are indicated. Notably rare is black walnut and pawpaw, absent from both collections. The presence of spice bush is noteworthy, since it has not previously been reported from Ohio Fort Ancient sites.
