Title: Éxodo de Quisqueya: Nuevas identidades de inmigrantes dominicanos y haitianos
Creators: Petrus, John S.
Advisor: Corona, Ignacio
Issue Date: 2009-06
Abstract: This thesis is a study of three contemporary migrant Caribbean authors: Dany Laferrière, Julia Alvarez, and Junot Díaz with special attention to how their characters’ racial and sexual identities are constructed. In turn, I look at how these characters’ identities are related to the issues of immigrants from the Caribbean to North America and how North American and Caribbean gender and racial constructs differ and synthesize. In addition, I explain how the issues of Caribbean migrants relate to issues of the contemporary world: immigration, globalization, and de-colonization. I use contemporary theorists’ work to support my arguments as well as selected works from these three authors. Advisor: Ignacio Corona
