dc.description.abstract A review of the need for coal gasification is made at the National level and for the State of Ohio. Current State energy policy promotes the construction of both low and high-Btu coal gasification plants in Ohio. Water requirements of such an industry are estimated and water availability is determined for the Southeastern Ohio study area. Direct stream use, reservoir and groundwater sources are compared economically. Linear programming optimization models are also developed for the coal gasification siting problem. These incorporate the cost of plants, gas transmission, coal supply and transport, solid waste disposal and water supply. Economic efficiency is achieved in meeting the demand for gas at designated market centers. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made for further analysis. en
