Abstract: Cordesman, Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, will speak on “The Changing Nature of the Afghan-Pakistan War” at noon on Wednesday, May 14, at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. The Taliban has sharply expanded it support in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the United States and NATO must send in more troops to meet the threat, Cordesman argues. However, military action is not enough. The United States must provide aid for development as well as support to stabilize effective governments. We must also work with neighboring powers. The war can be won, Cordesman says, but not in the short term – it will likely take until 2012.
