Abstract: Robert McMahon was thrilled to get an invitation in 2002 from Secretary of State Colin Powell to serve on the State Department’s Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation. That’s because McMahon knew exactly what the advisory committee does; for four years, he worked under its direction in the State Department’s Office of the Historian. As a member of the committee, McMahon, the Ralph D. Mershon Professor of History, oversees publication of the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) documentary series, the nation’s official record of foreign affairs, and advises on sensitive issues surrounding the declassification of government documents.
