Issue Date: 1982 Publisher: Ohio State University Abstract: The technique of pulsed laser vaporization, as described in a previous abstract, has been used to produce samples of $Pb_{2}, Sn_{2}$, and $Se_{2}$ in the gas phase. The molecules were cooled to near 77k by entraining them in a flow of the which had been pre-cooled by liquid $N_{2}$. Laser excitation spectra were recorded with near Doppler limited resolution, providing the first rotationally resolved spectra for $Pb_{2}$ and $Sn_{2}$. Two electronic transitions of $^{208}Pb_{2}$ were observed, the $F({O_{u}}^{+}) - X({O_{g}}^{+})$ and $C({O_{u}}^{+}) - X({O_{g}^{+})$ systems. Several vibronic bands have been analyzed for both system. When $^{116}Sn$ is vaporized, two electronic transitions are present in the laser excitation spectra. In this case the transitions are partially overlaped, resulting in a complex vibronic structure. Rotational analysis is in progress for bands of both systems.
