Abstract: A. molecular beam is crossed by a cw $CO_{2}$ laser tunable over 600 MHz. Excitation is observed by opto-thermal detection. One and two-photon transitions are observed. Conditions are varied such that rapid adiabatic passage phenomena (leading to inverted population) change to conventional power-broadened spectra. For still higher laser power five-photon transitions are found to limit this excitation process energetically. This limitation is attributed to the narrow-banded rapid-adiabatic-passage process occurring.
