Abstract: This preliminary work shows the feasibility of obtaining the phenomenon of collisional narrowing in the infrared vibration-rotation spectrum of $N_{2}O$ perturbed by $N_{2}$. Using R(16) line of a grating tunable $N_{2}O$ laser and a White type long cell with variable lengths from 40 to 1000 m, the absorption spectrum of $N_{2}O$ are obtained. The pressure of $N_{2}O$ is varied from 10 to 20 Torr. The variation of linewidths is to plot the peak height of absorption as a function of $N_{2}$ gas pressure. The peak absorption constant increases with the N2 gas pressure, reaches a maximum and then decreases. The maximum appears at the $N_{2}$ gas pressure of 300 Torr and 250 Torr when $N_{2}O$ pressures are 10 and 20 Torr, respectively. The conclusion that1 a collision partner with equal mass is most effective in changing the velocity through collisions is not exactly obvious in our case, since $N_{2}O$ and $N_{2}$ have quite different masses.
