Abstract: Since line intensities are proportional to the square of the matrix elements of the dipole moment operator, the determination of the signs of the dipole moment derivatives is not a simple problem. We show how it is possible to derive these signs by considering in the transition moment operators of the fundamental bands the rotational corrections to the main term in $\mu_{\alpha}$, the coefficient of which is the purely vibrational transition moment. The case of the $H_{2}O, NO_{2}$ and $H_{2}S$ molecules is considered and the first derivatives of their dipole moment with respect to normal and internal coordinates are given.
