Abstract

Rotational analysis of the Ogawa bands in the near infrared emission spectrum of NO has been initiated from plates taken at The National Research Council, Ottawa, by E. Miescher. The assignment $^{4}\Sigma^{-}\rightarrow 4^\Pi$ is confirmed. However, previous vibrational numberings$^{1}$ must be raised at least one unit on the basis of bands not observed under low resolution. A new head at 8015 {\AA}, quite free of overlapping structure, is tentatively assigned to the (2,0) band. We find $A\Pi$ to be $- 25 \pm 2 cm^{-1}$, which is close to the negative of the value for the $B^{2}\Pi$ state, as $predicted.^{2}$ Detailed analysis is underway in order to shed light on photodissociation and radiative recombination pro-ceases known to proceed via the $a^{4}\Pi$ state.
