Abstract: A strong Zeeman effect occurs in the bands of sulfur dioxide vapor in the 3000 - 3200 {\AA} region, using external axial magnetic fields of 1-8 kG. The magnetic effects are most pronounced near 3000 {\AA} and diminish considerably to the red of 3200 {\AA}. These magnetically-sensitive lines belong to a transition, from the ground state to a nonlinear, orbitally non-degenerate excited state of the singlet manifold. The origin and interpretation of the paramagnetism of this state will be discussed.
