Abstract

A theorem is proved to show that the high-field intermediate pair state degeneracy in exciton fusion and fission reactions in organic solids (the so-called “high-field resonances”) occurs in two and only two of any three mutually perpendicular planes. The theorem is valid for a wide variety of spin Hamiltonians. A simple experimental confirmation is provided by the magnetic field dependence of delayed fluorescence in non-crossing planes of pyrene and anthracene single crystals. An interesting by-product of the pyrene measurement is the revelation of structure in the angular spectrum that suggests the use of this experimental variant as a sensitive probe of chemical impurities which occur in low concentration. A calculation to elucidate the pyrene result is offered.
