Abstract

We have isolated CuO in solid Ar, Kr and Xc matrices. The sample was prepared by vacuum UV photolysis of $Cu/O_{2}/$rare gas mixtures; by sputtering of CuO with rare gas ions; and by reactive sputtering of Cu with $O_{2}/$rare gas mixtures from a discharge. We observed the vibrational structure of the $5100{\AA}$ system of CuO. The value of $\omega_{e}$ obtained from the matrix work is used to revise substantially the analysis of the previously observed gas phase spectra of CuO.
