Abstract: The $3500 {\AA}$ system of formaldehyde has been the subject of numerous investigations. The previous vibrational assignments have been based on the assumption that all the perpendicular bands in the spectra are of type B. We have carried out rotational analysis of at least one band in each progression in the spectra of $H_{2}CO, D_{2}CO$ and HDCO and established definitely that several bands are of type C. A vibrational analysis consistent with the polarizations of the bands is proposed.
