Abstract

Pyrene solutions were excited by x-rays at room temperature, and the monomer-excimer emission was studied as a function of solute concentration c, and x-ray energy and intensity, $E_{x}$ and $I_{x}$. The shape and position of the monomer-excimer emission $(3710 \leq \lambda \leq 6000$ {\AA}; excimer peaking at 4750 {\AA}) are identical to those obtained by u.v. excitation. The quantum yield, $I_{p}$, of the excimer fluorescence, relative to that, $I_{M}$, of the monomer is given by $\frac{I_{D}}{I_{M}} = Ke$ for $c \leq 10^{-2} M$. The constant K is 4 times smaller than its value for u.v. excitation and is unaffected by $E_{x}$ and $I_{x}$. The emission of 2-ethyl naphthalene in solution at room temperature is entirely monomeric (peaking at 3350 {\AA}) while that of pure liquid is almost completely dimeric (peaking at 3970 {\AA}). From the emission spectra of the pure liquid at various temperatures $(25^{\circ}C-143^{\circ}C)$ a binding energy B=0.22 ev is calculated for the 2-ethyl naphthalene excimer.
