dc.description.abstract Small negative carbon cluster ions including $C_{3}^{-}$ have been generated using a dual laser beam apparatus. The 1064nm fundamental from a pulsed Nd-YAG laser was dispersed from the 532nm second harmonic and focus on a Y metal surface generating a blue Ar/Y plasma. Carbon clusters, formed by the ablation of a pressed powder $^{12}C/^{13}C$ pellet with the dispersed 532nm second harmonic beam, readily trapped electronic from the plasma. The negatively charged clusters were partially extracted from vaporization region and condensed on a 12K cryostat window. Six isotopomeric peaks assignable to asymmetric stretch of the $C_{3}^{-}$ species were recorded in the infrared. Theoretical studies using B3LYP/6-31G(d), B3LYP/6-31+G(d) and MP2/6-31G(d) levels of theory were performed and support the linear structure and vibrational assignment of the observed bands to $C_{3}^{-}$. Taken together, the experimental and theoretical isotopic studies constitute proof of the assignment of the $1721.8 cm^{-1}$ band to the asymmetric stretching mode of linear $C_{3}^{-}$ proposed $earlier.^{3}$ en_US
