Abstract: 1,1,3,3-Tetramethyl-1,3-disilacyclobutane has been prepared by a number of reactions including the pyrolysis of 1,1-dimethyl-1-silacyclobutane and other starting materials. The products of the pyrolysis reactions have been studied in a flow cell which was mounted in an infrared spectrometer, and the reaction systems have been characterized more fully. The infrared and Roman spectra of pure 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-disilacyclobutane have been recorded in the gaseous, liquid, and solid phases, and the vibrational assignments have been made. The compound has been found to have a planer ring structure in all three states. These results and other aspects of the study will be discussed.
