Abstract: The ability to observer both completely solvated ion pairs and ion pairs coordinated to a controlled number of solvent molecules using matrix isolation, techniques has previously been used to obtain detailed information about the solvation of ion pairs by several solvents. Recently an interest in the solvation of ions and ion pairs by liquid HF has been stimulated by the suggestion that HF represents a simpler protic solvent that water. Thus, in this study the matrix spectra for solvates $M^{+}NO_{3}^{-} \cdot (HF)_{m}$, where can be controlled through control of the HF: argon ratio the matrices, have been of particular interest. Comparison will be made between the new data, which include the influence of coordinated HF molecules on the cation distortion of the anion, and similar result for the aprotic solvents DMSO. THF, pyridine and acetonitrile.
