Abstract: The measurement of vibrational optical activity and its use as an analytical tool has been a longtime goal in spectroscopy and stereochemistry. Recent instrumental developments in our laboratory have made possible the rapid and reliable recording of entire Raman optical activity spectra. Principle developments concern the light collection optics which reduces instrumental arte-facts, a spectrograph based on concave holographic grating technology (developed by a laboratory of the CNRS), and the coupling of the image intensifier used for the light detection to a solid State line scanner by a new high speed anamorphic optics system calculated by us. The very high stereochemical potential of vibrational optical activity is demonstrated by the proposition of several sector rules for 1 - substituted arylethanes and related compounds.
