Abstract: The bioluminescent bacteria Photobacterium Phosphereum produce a novel type of protein which produces an efficient blue fluorescence. The non-covalently associated prosthetic group has been isolated and identified as 6,7-dimethyl-8-(1^{\prime}-D-ribityl) lumazine. The CARS spectra of free and bound lumazine have been recorded in water and $D_{2}O$. An analysis of the spectra and conclusions as to the type of lumazine-protein interactions will be made.
