    From Quiet Straight Lines to Noisy Grouped Students: Creating Math Discussions

    Quiet classrooms are not always conducive to learning, especially in a mathematics classroom. Students should have the opportunity to discuss their thinking and work together on complex tasks in order to develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics content. Through the implementation of classroom norms, selection of complex tasks, and establishment of appropriate student groups, teachers can create a space where students have meaningful mathematics discussions that promote learning.

    Relaxation can provide time for reflection. This paper illustrates how relaxation, in the form of fishing, led to reflection involving mathematics and technology – in particular, the calculator technology fostered by Bert Waits and Frank Demana, Ohio's internationally-recognized leaders in the field.

    Mentoring Teachers: There's an App for That!

    Faithful implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics requires states, districts, and teachers to not only design instruction that meets the new content standards, but also pay close attention to the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice that are interwoven within these Standards. The Ohio Resident Educator Program partners beginning teachers with experienced mentors, each of whom might be struggling to conceptualize how the practice standards "look" during instruction. We examine a technological application (app) that mentor teachers can use to collaborate with their resident educators. Common Core Look-fors can be used by mentor teachers to collect data on how their mentee provides students with opportunities to engage in the mathematical practices. In addition, the app promotes collaboration by providing a means for mentors and their mentees to articulate their strategies for increasing student engagement in practices.

    Endangered Species: A Population Simulation

    This article describes an activity which incorporates biology and mathematics at the secondary level. A hands-on simulation of a decreasing animal population is provided. Students collect their data, record it in a table, and analyze it using technological tools. The mathematics used in this activity includes rates; fitting functions to data; creating and interpreting linear, quadratic, and exponential functions; and using functions to solve real-world problems.

    Toward a Proof of the Chain Rule

    The proof of the chain rule from calculus is usually omitted from a beginning calculus course. Six different rationales and motivations are presented here to help students understand some of the rule's details and the reason the rule is valid.

    Mathematics teacher preparation programs include an induction process into the educational community composed of coursework as well as on-campus and field experiences. This article describes a unique mathematics teacher preparation program at Bowling Green State University called "Science and Math Education in ACTION." We share the aims of each year in ACTION as well as students' reactions to their experiences in and from the program.

    The Importance of Ethnomathematics in the Math Class

    We contend that the teaching and learning of mathematics should reflect and embrace the cultural diversity found in our mathematics classrooms and in our increasingly interconnected world. The goal of this article is to convey a simple message: ethnomathematics, that is, culturally-based mathematics, should be (further) integrated into the mathematics classroom. To achieve this goal, we discuss what ethnomathematics is and why it should be (further) incorporated into mathematics curricula. We also present examples of ethnomathematics in the math class, some of the arguments against inclusion of ethnomathematics into the curricula, as well as some ways in which these arguments can be successfully countered. Ultimately, we hope to demonstrate that ethnomathematics, which has the potential to show our students' multicultural views of mathematics, may help students develop a greater interest in mathematics.
