    The Early Stages of Ablabesmyia Annulata (Say) (Diptera, Chironomidae)

    The larva of Ablabesmyia annulata is remarkably similar to Malloch's Tanypus sp. A, briefly described in 1915. It differs from other American species in the following characteristics: 3 inner teeth of lingua truncate, all claws of posterior prolegs yellow, and both anterior and posterior prolegs apically and densely armed with spinules. In the pupa, the respiratory organ is smooth and ovate, lacking a terminal papilla. The respirtory opening is distinctly preapical. The species is widely distributed in Ohio.

    Studies of the Gyponinae (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) : Fourteen New Species of Gypona from Central and South America

    Fourteen new species of South American Gypona (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) are described. Thirteen are placed in the subgenus Gypona: G. gilba n. sp., G. laxa n. sp., G. cerina n. sp., G. nigricara n. sp., G. medica n. sp., G. plaga n. sp., G. patula n. sp., G. pallida n. sp., G. pallidula n. sp., G. funiida n. sp., G. reversa n. sp., G. infuscara n. sp., and G. viridans n. sp. and one species, G. aurantica n. sp., is placed in the subgenus Marganalana.

    The new subgenera of Gyponana (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) and the type species of each are described: subgenus Spinanella n. subgen., and type species 5. rubralineata n. sp. from Venezuela, and subgenus Pandara n. subgen. and type species P. eleganta n. sp. from Bolivia.

    Echinocaris Punctata (Hall) from the Hamilton Group, Thedford, Ontario

    Two unaccessioned and previously undescribed specimens of Echinocaris punctata (Hall) have been discovered in the Hyde Collection, Department of Geology, Case Western Reserve University. These specimens are the first representatives of this diagnostic Hamilton species to be reported from the Middle Devonian of Ontario.

    A specimen of peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus from Ohio, originally erroneously assigned to the Pacific Coast population F. p. pealei, is an individual of the nearly expirant eastern forest-inhabiting F. p. ana turn.

    Effects of Temperature on Seta Elongation in Atrichum Undulatum

    Field-collected gametophytes of Atrichum undulatum were placed in two growth chambers which were maintained at the same light intensity and light period, but at two different temperature regimes. After sporophyte development, differences in seta lengths were observed. Measurements of cell lengths revealed that attached setae grown in the high-temperature regime (12°-22°C) were longer than those grown in a low-temperature regime (3°-12°C), as a result of both more cell divisions and a larger average cell length. Thus, temperature appeared to influence both cell division and cell elongation in the setae of Atrichum undulatum.

    Some Aspects of the Life Histories of Three Closely Related Crayfish Species, Orconectes Obscurus, O. Sanborni, and O. Propinquus

    The life histories of three closely related species of crayfish, Orconectes obscurus (Hagen), Orconectes sanborni (Faxon) and Orconectes propinquus (Girard), which occupy separate rivers in northeastern Ohio, were studied and compared. Crayfish were collected from the same location, approximately bi-weekly, from April through October 1967. Major aspects of life histories of the three species are similar and can be summarized as follows. Mature crayfish mate in August and September; eggs are laid in April and May and young become independent in June. Growth and activity cease during the winter and resume in the spring. First-form males change to second form in the spring and in late summer revert back to first form. Immature individuals molt several times during the summer, each time increasing in carapace length by one mm, or sometimes by two mm or more. Males of Orconectes obscurus and 0. sanborni do not attain sexual maturity until their second summer, but many 0. propinquus males become sexually mature in their first summer. Attempts at interspecific mating in the laboratory yielded one successful mating, that between a male Orconectes propinquus and a female 0. sanborni. This female could not be kept, so it is not known whether viable young would have been produced. The pleura were clipped in different combinations for marking and recapture studies which were conducted during the summer of 1967. Rates of recapture of marked individuals were: Orconectes obscurus, 28%; 0. sanborni, 1%; and 0. propinquus, 14%.
