Age and Growth of the Walleye, Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum, in Hoover Reservoir, Ohio
    (1970-09) Tucker, Thomas R.; Taub, Stephen H.
A total of 527 walleyes was studied from trap-net collections made in March-April, 1967, in Hoover Reservoir, Ohio, The age and growth-structure analysis of this population showed that age group II walleyes (1965 year class) were predominant in the catch. Few walleyes older than age group V were captured. The greatest growth increment was attained during the first year of life. In comparison with walleyes studied elsewhere, Hoover Reservoir walleyes grew rapidly until their fifth year of life, followed by a decline in growth rate. Few large walleyes were present in the Hoover Reservoir population at the time of this study.

Early Postglacial Environment of a Small Kettle in Mercer County, Ohio
    (1970-09) Urban, Donald R.; Forsyth, Jane L.
Excavation of a series of pits in a filled kettle at St. Charles Seminary, in southeastern Mercer County, revealed nine to twelve feet of lacustrine silty-clay sediments above clayrich till. Near the bottom, in the middle of the kettle, the sediments were mostly clays, and contained organic material. Fragments of Picea (spruce) and a few specimens of the mollusks, Helisoma anceps striatum, Gyraulus altissimus, and Amnicola limosa, from the bottom imply an open kettle (lake) in a boreal climate at this time of initial sedimentation. Sediments immediately above this level contained Thuja (northern white cedar), which could indicate either boreal or somewhat less cold conditions. Strata higher in the section were more silty and contained some seepage, but lacked any organic material. Soils of the Montgomery series have developed in the fill of the kettle; soils in the surrounding ground moraine are in the Blount and Morley series.

Age Effects on Lactic- and Malic-Acid Dehydrogenases in C57BL/6 Mouse Testes
    (1970-09) Burich, Raymond L.; Ewing, Keith L.
There is evidence that lactic-acid-dehydrogenase (LDH) and malic-acid-dehydrogenase (MDH) activities vary with age in several mammalian organs. This study shows that both enzymes in the testes of the C57BL/6 mouse exhibit age-related changes. These changes are most evident when the LDH/MDH ratio is considered. The LDH/MDH ratio decreases to two days before onset of spermatogenesis, remains unchanged to one day before weaning, increases to four or five days prior to breeding activity, and oscillates through the remainder of the 365 days studied. Although these are in vitro results, activity changes occur coincident with physiological changes in the testes.

A New Species of Jamacerus from Florida (Homoptera: Cicadellidae)
    (1970-09) Freytag, Paul H.
A new species of the genus Jamacerus, J. floridanus, from the everglades area of Florida is described. This species is very closely related to the only other species of the genus, J. farri Freytag.

Controlled Phenylhydrazine-Induced Reticulocytosis in the Rat
    (1970-09) Flanagan, J. Patrick; Lessler, Milton A.
The pattern of development of phenylhydrazine-induced rat reticulocytosis was studied over a period of nine days. Intraperitoneal injections of phenylhydrazine (4 mg/100 gm) every other day caused a fall in hematocrit which leveled off at 60% of normal by the fifth day. Increased erythropoiesis was indicated by a three-fold increase in the number of circulating reituclocytes after the first three injections. The immediate response was the release of stored mature reticulocytes from the bone marrow. As the anemia progressed, more and more young reticulocytes appeared until 70 to 85% of the red cells in the peripheral circulation were reticulocytes and 20% of these were juvenile forms.

Some Algae of the Upper Cuyahoga River System in Ohio
    (1970-09) Rhodes, Russell G.; Terzis, Anthony J.
A qualitative survey of algae was made during June and September, 1967, in three tributaries of the Cuyahoga River in Geauga County: West Branch, East Branch, and Tare Creek. Sixty-four species of algae found in this survey are reported here. Eight species which were collected at the majority of the 14 stations sampled are Cladophora glomerata, Aphanochaete repens, Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum, Euglena gracilis, Vaucheria sessilis, Tribonema bombycinum, Oscillatoria nigra, and O. limosa.

Human-Pathogenic Fungi in the Soils of Central Ohio
    (1970-09) Kurup, P. V.; Schmitt, J. A.
A survey of soil from several sites in Franklin and surrounding counties in central Ohio for human-pathogenic fungi was undertaken. The samples were analyzed for the presence of dermatophytes and keratinophytic fungi by the hair-bait technique, for systemic mycotic agents by a direct spraying method, and for nocardiae by the paraffinbait technique. The hair-bait technique revealed Trichophyton ajelloi, Microsporum gypseum, M. cookei, Trichophyton terrestre, Chrysosporium tropicum, C. asperatum, C. keratinophilum, Arthroderma tuberculatum, and Ctenomyces serratus in the soil of Ohio for the first time. Thirty-four strains of Nocardia were isolated by the paraffin-bait technique; 12 were specifically identified as N. asteroides by employing standard techniques. Histoplasma capsulatum and Allescheria boydii were isolated by direct spraying of the soil suspension onto selective media.

Pair Formation, Nest Building, and Egg Laying of the Common Grackle in Northern Ohio
    (1970-09) Maxwell, George R., II
A nesting study of the Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) on South Bass Island, Ohio, was completed during the 1964 and 1965 breeding seasons. The pair bond was achieved through two stages: (1) maintenance of contact between individuals of both sexes, and (2) acceptance of the male by the female. Multi-male "chase and leader" flights were conspicuous throughout the pair-formation period. Length of time required for nest-building varied from seven days to eight weeks. The first egg was laid three days after the nest was completed. The eggs were laid between 0620 and 1000 hours at 24-hour intervals, and the clutch size was 4,7 eggs per nest.

Observations on the Swimming, Righting, and Burrowing Movements of Young Horseshoe Crabs, Limulus Polyphemus
    (1970-09) Vosatka, E. D.
This paper presents a record of observations made on the swimming, righting, and burrowing movements of twelve young horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus (L.), kept in a salt-water aquarium in New London, Ohio, during 1965 and 1966. Activity occurred primarily at night. Limulus swam inverted, using its legs and gills for propulsion and its tail for steering, while the sloping front of the cephalothorax acted as a hydroplane to lift the body as it moved forward through the water. Arching its body and using its tail as a lever, Limulus could right itself when turned over on its back. Burrowing involved both leg motion and body flexing.

Shoreline Algae of Western Lake Erie
    (1970-09) Downing, Rachel Cox
The algae of western Lake Erie have been extensively studied for more than 70 years, but, until the present study by the author, conducted between April and October, 1967, almost nothing was known of the shoreline as a specific algal habitat. A total of 61 taxa were identified from the shorelines. The importance of this habitat is very clear from the results of this study, for, of the 61 taxa found, 39 are new records for western Lake Erie, and one, Arnoldiella conchophila Miller, appears to be a new United States record, having been previously reported only from central Russia.
