    Findley honored for Middle East publication

    COLUMBUS -- Carter V. Findley, Humanities Distinguished Professor in the Department of History and an Honorary Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, has received the British-Kuwait Friendship Society Prize in Middle Eastern Studies for his book The Turks in World History (Oxford University Press, 2004).

    Special Advisor to U.N. Secretary General to visit central Ohio

    A series of recommendations to end poverty by the year 2015 is the subject of two talks in central Ohio by Jeffrey Sachs, special advisor to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and Director of the U.N. Millennium Project. Sachs will hold a press conference at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday (10/5) at Ohio State's Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Avenue. At 3 p.m., he will discuss "The End of Poverty" at the Ohio Union West Ballroom, 1739 N. High Street. He will also speak at 7:30 p.m. at Ohio Wesleyan University's Gray Chapel, where he will be awarded an honorary degree.

    Mershon Center to hold Peace Matters conference

    The Mershon Center for International Security Studies will hold “Peace Matters: A Forum on the Discipline and Practice of Peace and Conflict Studies” on Friday-Saturday, May 11-12, at The Ohio State University’s Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. This conference, co-sponsored by the Ohio Council of Churches, will be an interdisciplinary workshop on peace and conflict studies in the United States.

    Noted historian to discuss reform of United Nations

    Reform of the United Nations will be the topic of a lecture by the former secretariat to the international commission studying the future of the organization on Thursday, April 12, at 4 p.m. at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater, 1871 N. High St. Paul Kennedy, J. Richardson Dilworth professor of history and director of international security studies at Yale University, will speak on “Reforming the United Nations: Mission Impossible?”

    The Mershon Center for International Security Studies is pleased to welcome a variety of post-doctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and other guests in residence during 2006-07. Seven are arriving for the fall quarter, with two more coming in the winter and spring.

    Expert on Iraqi women to speak at Ohio State

    The role of women in modern-day Iraq will be the topic of a talk by an expert in the field at on Monday, April 9, at noon at The Ohio State University’s Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Nadje Al-Ali, senior lecturer in social anthropology at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter in Britain, will speak on “Iraqi Women Between Dictatorships, Wars, Sanctions and Occupation.”

    Mershon Center seeks applicants for new Mason Chair
    (Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 2006-09-18) Becker, Cathy
    In 1997, Major General Raymond E. Mason Jr. (ret.) gave \$500,000 to fund an endowed professorship in military history at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Now, the Mason Foundation has generously agreed to give \$600,000 more to turn the endowed professorship into an endowed chair. The Mershon Center and Department of History are conducting a joint search to fill the new position.

    Conference brings Israeli, Palestinian scholars to Columbus

    "Jerusalem: Cultures and Communities in Contention" will be the subject of a conference held Nov. 27-28 at The Ohio State University's Mershon Center for International Security Studies. The working meeting brings together two Israeli and two Palestinian scholars to complete a manuscript begun in the 1990s.

    Survey to address perception of terrorism in Central Ohio

    Do Central Ohio residents believe they are at risk of a terrorist attack? Do they think Homeland Security's color-coded advisory system is effective? Have they used government-sponsored websites such as www.ready.gov? These and other questions are the subject of an online survey being conducted by Ohio State University researchers from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10.

    Stewart nominated to National Security Education Board

    Todd I. Stewart, director of the OSU Program for International and Homeland Security, was nominated Thursday by President George W. Bush to serve for four years on the National Security Education Board.
