Czy zawód jest trafnym wskaźnikiem pozycji społecznej niepracujących respondentów?
    (IFiS Publishers, 1997) Domański, Henryk
I attempt to determine to what extent data on occupational career from the past, reported by respondents non-working in the survey, are valid measure of their social status. I argue, here, that these procedure, often applied in the analyses, may be justified as far as non-working incumbents of occupational roles do not differ from their working counterparts with respect to important sociological variables. I refer to the data from the Polish General Social Survey. According to the findings presented here, there are substantial differences between working and non-working persons in their objective characteristics, views, and attitudes. It means that including under the same occupational label both, working and nonworking respondents (identified by their last reported job) increases social heterogeneity of occupational categories. The question is to what extent lower validity of occupation, resulting from such procedure, is counterweighted by its merits. In the concluding section I point out some analytical and theoretical rationale which justify application of the past job to measure social status of non-working respondents.

An urgent need to speed up timing of surveys as well as seeking for reduction of financial costs of research prompted development of the new method of surveying. We make an overview, here, a telephone survey, and more precisely - Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI). There was a synthetic description of CATI in the second volume of ASK of 1996. In what follows we consider the effect of CATI on the information received from respondents. We analyze: (i) anonymity of respondents, (ii) 'interviewing effect', (iii) unique situation of the telephone survey, and (iv) peculiar communication with respondent.

In the first part of this paper I overview various approach to detect the 'interviewer effect' as well as I put forward same hypothesis on which attributes of the interviewer may affect responses given by researched persons. In the second part I present results of analysis on the effects of selected characteristics of interviewers in the preliminary stage of interview (approaching of respondent) on its realization. The analysis proved operation of the effect. It shows that 'realization' depends on education and and on the size and type of place where interviews are carried out.

Refleksje metodologiczne nad badaniami ocalałych z Holocaustu
    (IFiS Publishers, 1997) Engelking-Boni, Barbara
Based on experience derived from my research on the Holocaust's victims, I point out specific features of the methodological framework in this area of qualitative research. The peculiarity resides in non-structured narrative interview which I applied - in main that the interview tend to transfer, in certain situations, into a story about the life events of respondents during the war. I also indicate some limitations of this technique connected to: (i) non-representativeness of the sampled persons, (ii) language and cultural difficulties, (iii) overlooking of differentiation of the war experiences of respondents which imprinted on their attitudes and reports.

This is same story (self-reflection) by sociologist who ran a fieldwork. I describe here surprising events, methodological pitfalls, and epistemological questions connected to the fieldwork. The intellectual process will be depicted which includes: (i) description of researched reality (so-called 'stories from the field'), (ii) analytical process, and (iii) procedures (so-called 'triangulation' procedures) which researcher applies in the field as well as in writing report - in order to 'present' researched area in a valid way. Three above-mentioned stages of presentation of the researched area are intermingled to create one intellectual process, referred to as a 'fieldwork'.

Polskie pamiętnikarstwo konkursowe: ideologia w autobiografii, autobiografia w ideologii
    (IFiS Publishers, 1997) Palska, Hanna
This paper concerns ideological contexts of the competitions of memoirs while regarded as a source of sociological data in Poland. I deal with this problem with reference to the two episodes from history of this type of research. The first of them led to 'New Generation of Peasants' by Józef Chałasiński in 1938. The second yielded series of competitions on autobiographies from the early period of People's Poland (1948-1956). I argue that ideologization of the topics and instructions included in the competitions' announcements bears on substantial methodological consequences. Without objecting validity of the Polish memoirs' collections, I point out its limitations and analytical possibilities.
