Cercopithecus Aethiops Kidney Cells: Cytochemical and Morpholocial Characteristics of Cells Cultivated in Chemically Defined Medium Compared to Cultures Supplemented with Horse or Fetal-Calf Sera
    (1973-09) Hayes, Thomas G.; Evans, Virginia J.
Cultures (NCTC-designated) of kidney cells of Cercopithecus aethiops were grown in a chemically defined medium (NCTC-135) and were then examined morphologically and cytochemically. Comparisons were made with cultures of the same cell line in medium supplemented with either 10% fetal-calf or 10% horse sera. The epitheloid cells of the serum-free cultures demonstrated only a slight difference in enzymatic activity when compared to the cultures supplemented by 10% fetal-calf and 10% horse sera. The use of a particular serum supplement in combination with a chemically defined medium did not appear to determine if a cell culture would be reactive or nonreactive to alkaline or acid phosphatase. Results indicated also that alkaline-phosphatase activity was altered very little by freezing of the cells prior to testing. Variability of alkaline-phosphatase was interpreted as a result of a combination of environmental factors and age in vitro. The strong activity of acid phosphatase, noted both in the serum-free culture (NCTC-4952) and in the culture (NCTC-6314) supplemented by 10% fetal-calf serum, was regarded as reflection of the number of culture passages in vitro and the constitutive nature of the enzyme.

Methods of Prairie Development Used at the Aullwood Audubon Center, Dayton, Ohio
    (1973-09) Moeller, Robert
Tht Aullwood Audubon Center in Dayton, Ohio, in order to expand its educational offerings, began the development of a tall-grass prairie in the fall of 1959. Seeds were gathered in the fall from natural prairies in Adams County, Ohio, and were stratified in soil and buried in an outdoor pit. In April 1960 the seeds were broadcast by hand with a cover crop of oats on Miamian Silt Loam soil that had been plowed and disked the preceding fall. In the fall of 1960 the site was mowed and raked. In April 1961 straw was spread over the site and burned. In 1963 biennial spring burning was begun, and annual extensions of the prairie in quarter-acre increments were instigated, using the same procedure as for the original site.

Some Characteristics of an Oscillatoria-Dominated Metalimnetic Phytoplankton Community
    (1973-09) Wohler, J. Richard; Hartmann, Richard T.
Crystal Lake, located in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, is a small dimictic lake which during summer stratification contains a large population of Oscillatoria agardhii var. isothrix Skuja in the metalimnetic region. Carbon fixation measurements indicate that this Oscillatoria-dominated community is capable of relatively rapid rates of photosynthesis at low levels of illumination. Analyses of dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, phosphate, calcium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, and chlorophyll a were made on water and seston samples from a vertical water column near the center of the lake. The results of some of these analyses indicate that increased availability of trace nutrients may be involved in the occurrence of the Oscillatoria-dominated community.

    (1973-09) Easterly, Nathan William
This report is the second of a series of articles to be prepared as a second Flora of the Oak Openings. The study represents a comprehensive survey of members of the Cyperaceae, Gramineae, Juncaceae, Sparganiaceae, and Xyridaceae in the Oak Openings region.

Rare and Endangered Vetebrates of Ohio
    (1973-09) Smith, H. G.; Burnard, R. K.; Good, Eugene E.; Keener, J. M.
This paper, an annotated list of Ohio's rare and endangered vertebrate species, was compiled to supplement a similar national list and includes 10 mammals, 62 birds, 10 reptiles, 4 amphibians, and 33 fishes. Where possible, suggestions are made both as to causes of the rare or endangered status of these species and as to means of halting the trend. Ratings of endangered, rare, peripheral, or undetermined, as defined for the national classification, are given for each species.
