Logika badacza i logika respondenta. Problem adekwatności narzędzia badawczego
    (IFiS Publishers, 2003) Sztabiński, Franciszek
This article deals with adequacy of tools of research. I begin with making some distinction between the methodological, psychological and sociological aspects of adequacy of measurement and interview questions. The second part concerns analysis of empirical data with respect to showing consequences of asking inadequate questions which used tenth-point scales. Data comes from seven surveys carried out by marketing agency on milk products. This analysis disclosed that profiles of answers to each questions employing 10-point scales were very similar regardless of the subject asked in the question and product of milk. This similarity suggests that all these answers were biased resulting from asking inadequate question. One may assume that this was construction of scales which determined distribution of answers: it showed to be bi-modal and not normal as one could expect.

Spójność odpowiedzi na skalach dwubiegunowych o różnej liczbie kategorii
    (IFiS Publishers, 2003) Czarnik, Szymon
The article is devoted to the analysis of cognitive availability of measurement scales, based on the comparison of answers given by respondents to the very same question that is provided with scales having different number of categories. The measure of cognitive control over the scales presented to the respondent is inferred from consistence of his answers. The scale that is difficult to master will be known by the answers that are inconsistent with the ones given on other scales. First part of the article contains a formal definition of consistence and the way of constructing formula for the level of beyond-chance consistence of answers. In the second part I present the results of empirical research conducted in a group of students taking part in statistical analysis classes. The results initially confirm the hypothesis that increase in number of scale categories heightens the level of difficulty that a scale presents to the respondent.

Analiza przydatności schematu EGP jako wskaźnika pozycji społecznej
(IFiS Publishers, 2003) Domański, Henryk; Przybysz, Dariusz
This analysis aims at presentation of class schema constructed by Robert Erikson and John Goldthorpe referred to EGP. It is well-established and most widely employed coding schema in international research on social stratification. After short discussion of theoretical assumptions of the EGP we present rules of its operationalisation in terms of variables. Then we proceed to empirical test on validity of the EGP in the Polish case. Data comes from the Polish edition of European Social Survey carried out in 2002 on national sample. Our test resides in comparison of dicriminating power of EGP and Polish Sociological Classification with respect to selected variables referred to social status, attitudes and values. According to our findings explanatory power of EGP is much the same as Polish schema. In appendix we include SPSS modules which generates EGP codes based on information concerning: ISCO 88, self-employment and supervisory position.

In approaching to conceptualisation of research one has to make decisions which predetermine results. In this article I will attempt to show consequences of some of such decisions. They refer to two steps of research: concerning choice of research technique and construction of questionnaire.

This text is devoted to dirty data phenomenon, and these data are meant as information which are secret and discrediting. The author analyzes factors contributing to increased accessibility of social researchers to such data and offers some typical situations, which dirty data researchers have to face. Some problems involving methodological, ethical issues and institutionalized forms of coercion that may be used by dirty data investigators are also considered in the text. The author differentiates basic methods and compares them with regard to some criteria such as costs, representativeness, required skills and potential range of topics covered. From the perspective of sociology of knowledge relations as researcher--scientific milieu, sociologist--other professionals dealing with dirty data topics and researchers--political institutions are also shown in the text.
