An Early Litter for the Opossum (Didelphis Marsupialis) in Ohio

A female opossum, Didelphis marsupialis, was found dead on the road in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, on 25 February 1973, with nine young tightly attached to her teats. The size of the young suggests that they were conceived the first week of January and that the female was reproductively active during the last part of December. Early breeding at this latitude (lat. 40° N) is very unusual and is compared with known breeding dates from other areas of temperate North America.

Psammotettix mexcala n. sp., the first known Mexican species of the genus, is described.

Eleutherascus lectardii (Nicot) von Arx, isolated from soils of Clark County and Franklin County in Ohio, is apparently reported for the first time in the United States. It is characterized by spiny, brown ascospores and by elliptical or ovoid asci. The asci are without a peridium and are mostly eight-spored.
Notes on the Algal Flora of Illinois, III. Additons to the Chlorophyceae

This paper lists several species of chlorophycean algae previously unreported or infrequently reported as occurring in Illinois. A total of 125 species and varieties arc enumerated, of which 27 are new records for the State. Included are first records for species of the genera Dunaliella, Chlorogonium, Platymonas, Pteromonas, Dysmorphococcus, Asterococcus, Stylosphaeridium, Elakatothrix, Geminella, Pseudendoclonium, Westella, Planktosphaeria, Eremosphaera, and Spirotaenia.
Neutron Activation Analysis of Aluminum in Postmortem Human Lung Tissue

Neutron activation analysis was used to assay trace quantities of aluminum in postmortem human lung tissue samples. Dried accurately weighed lung tissue samples were activated in a 3.3 x 1()13 neutrons/cm2/sec thermal neutron flux and analyzed using a lithiumdrifted germanium detector and 4096 channel gamma spectrophotometer. The 1778 kcv gamma photon emitted by Al28 was quantified using the comparator technique with highly purified aluminum cyclohexane butyrate as the Al standard. The aluminum content of human lung tissue was shown not to be related to occupational exposure to industrial fiberglass. Residents of Akron, Ohio, were shown to have significantly higher concentrations of aluminum in their lungs than do residents of Newark, Ohio. A set of normal concentrations for aluminum in postmortem human lung tissue was developed, based on neutron activation analysis. The relative simplicity, accuracy, and precision of this technique suggest its use in further studies of this type.
Effects of Light and Aging on Ribonucleotide Composition in Avena Sativa

This investigation was carried out to study the effects of light on the ribonucleotidebase composition of coleoptiles and primary leaves of oat seedlings (Avena sativa L., var. victory). The effects of aging on the base composition of primary leaves were also studied. The nucleotides obtained by alkaline hydrolysis of ribonucleic acid were separated by eluting a Dowex-1-X8 column with formic acid and ammonium formate.

Nine species of A trichopogon occur in Ohio and immediately adjacent states: A. minutus, known from the Palearctic and Nearctic regions generally; A. websteri, occurring widely in the eastern and southern states; A. levis, previously reported from Ohio and easily the most common ceratopogonid in the state; A. fusculus and A. titanus n. sp., both large and widespread but scarce; A. peregrinus and A. fusinervis, found in limited numbers; A. geminus n. sp., fairly common; A. falcatus n. sp., known from only 1 locality in Michigan. A. websteri and A. levis, not previously recorded from Canada, occur on Pelee Island, Ontario, as does also A. geminus n. sp.
