Effect of Sun-Exposure on Emergence of 17-Year Cicadas

Nymphs of 17-year cicadas, Magicicada spp., emerged from the soil on the south side of apple trees about 2 to 5 days before emergence on the north side and in the interior of nearby woods in northern Ohio. Cicadas began to emerge 2 to 3 days after 50% of the nvmphal population showed black prothoracic markings. Development of two large black spots on the prothoracic dorsum of nymphs in a field, and their emergence, occurred one day prior to that of nymphs on the south side of apple trees. The appearance of the black spots indicates that nymphs are ready to emerge from the soil.
Genetic Differentiation of Lymphoblastic Sarcoma Histocompatibility Sites in DBA/1J and C57BL/6 Mice

A chemically induced, 20-methylcholanthrene, lymphoblastic sarcoma, in DBA/1J mice was used to determine the histocompatibility of the tumor between the DBA/1J and C57BL/GJ strains. Although 8 different histocompatibility sites exist between the 2 strains, this work demonstrated that these 8 sites were transmitted and expressed as a 5 unit discrete factor phenotypic variation. Fi x Fi hybrid animals were tested through the Fg generation and showed that only 5 linkage groups are involved in the transmission of the various histocompatibility sites. Survivors of the implanted F9 generation were used as progenitors for the Fi0 generation. Tumor take frequencies with the Fi0 generation demonstrated that the inheritance of tumor susceptibility behaved as a discrete function of a 5 unit inheritance factor.
Eperisocrinus New Genus (Crinoidea,Inadunata): Type Species Delocrinus Missouriensis Miller and Gurley, 1890

Reexamination of the holotype specimen of Delocrinus missouriensis showed that it is referable to the Erisocrinidae, rather than to the Catacrinidae, the family to which Delocrinus is presently assigned. A new genus, Eperisocrinus, with Delocrinus missouriensis the type species, is proposed, based on the following characters: Dorsal cup with radial plates having articular facets and obtuse proximal angles, essentially as in Erisocrinus but differing in having a considerably higher basal impression; infrabasal plates much more reduced and steeper walled adjacent to the stem; larger basal plates; interbasal and interradial sutures nearly equal in length; and anal X represented on outer wall of cup.
Preferred Temperature of the Common Shiner, Notropis Cornutus, in Relation to Age, Size, Season, and Nutritional State

Preferred temperatures were determined in a laboratory temperature gradient for the common shiner Notropis cornutus (Mitchill). Preferred temperature was correlated with age, size, season, and nutritional state. Preferred temperatures were higher than, and positively related to acclimation temperatures in all groups. Age, size, and starvation did not significantly affect the preferred temperature. Significant seasonal differences in preferred temperature were observed with springcollected fish preferring higher temperatures than autumn-collected fish kept at the same ambient water temperature.
Food Habits and Feeding Periodicity of the Rainbow, Fantail, and Banded Darters in Four Mile Creek

Stomach analyses were carried out on 3 darter species {Etheostoma caeruleum, E. flabellare and E. zonale) from Four Mile Creek, Ohio, May 1973-May 1974. These species are mainly insectivorous in this stream. Trichopterans were the most important food type by weight in the diets of E. caeruleum and E. flabellare; chironomid larvae and pupae and Simulium sp. dominated the diet of E. zonale. Electivity indices indicated a general selection for Simulium sp. and Trichoptera by E. caeruleum and E. flabellare, with E. zonale selecting against all trichopterans. Feeding activity of the 3 species was largely confined to the daylight hours, and 2 feeding peaks were generally observed for E. caeruleum and E. flabellare: one in the morning and the other in late afternoon or early evening. Over a 24 hr period, E. zonale consumed smaller quantities of food than the other species and exhibited no feeding maxima.
