Influence of the source of information on homophily assessment: data provided by subjects vs data provided by their confidants

The present article analyses data on ego-centred networks from a nationally representative sample of Polish citizens (egos) and their regular conversation partners (alters). In the study being used, apart from obtaining information from the respondent (the ego) about characteristics of their friends (alters), the respondent was additionally asked to provide contact details for his/her alters and the interviewers traced them. This allows to compare data concerning alters obtained from ego and from alters themselves. In the first part of the article, a comparison for three characteristics – age, education and occupational status – is provided as well as patterned differences are presented. In the second part, the issue whether the assessment of the strength of homophily depends on the source information about the alters is raised. The differences are present, although they are rather slight. The authors observe greater homophily when they rely on the responses of the ego. Based on the results, recommendations for future research on ego-centred networks are formulated.

Standardization of measurement is a prerequisite for cross-national and/or overtime comparative analyses. However, there are instances in the literature where the validation of constructs resulted in producing scales or subscales defined differently from the proposed theoretical structure and across countries. In this paper, we propose an empirical methodology that provides standardized overall measurements of unidimensional constructs to be used in cross-national and overtime comparative research. Initially, the inclusion of items for further analyses is investigated at country level and overtime. The common items are to define the overall measurements and their structure is validated. Based on the Confirmatory factor analyses results, their psychometric properties are assessed. To demonstrate the implementation of the suggested methodology and facilitate practical applications, we use the human values measurements included in the European Social Survey questionnaire for Southern Europe, 2002-2018. Moreover, in order to show how these measurements may be used in further analyses, their association to subjective life satisfaction, happiness and general health are also presented.

Intergenerational educational mobility and cultural practices: a study on cultural stratification using diagonal reference models
(The Ohio State University Libraries in partnership with the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences, 2021) Domański, Henryk
This study revisits and extends a classic question in sociology and tests three competing hypotheses about the effects of intergenerational educational mobility on cultural tastes. By means of diagonal reference models to data coming from nationally representative survey carried out in 2019, the study shows that mobile individuals come to resemble their nonmobile counterparts in their current educational level which confirms hypothesis of maximization. This is inconsistent with Bourdieu’s view that habitus is largely determined by primary socialization at parental home. The study also demonstrates that upwardly and downwardly mobile individuals switch musical tastes of both parental and current educational level.

Mathematics of Culture, or How to Count the Cultural Character of a City?
(The Ohio State University Libraries in partnership with the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences, 2021) Klekotko, Marta
The purpose of this article is to critically discuss the methodology for measuring the so-called urban scenes and cultural dimensions of the city proposed by the contemporary Chicago school. The article consists of four parts. In the first part, the author presents the assumptions of the scenes theory and the concept of “cultural dimensions”, called by the authors of the theory “grammar of culture”. Furthermore, the author presents the assumptions of the quantitative measurement of urban cultural scenes and cultural dimensions of the city, i.e. the so-called “mathematics of culture”. It presents basic measures and methods of measurement, including the so-called Performance Score, cultural profiles, cultural dimensions, cultural types, and cultural dynamics of cities. In the third part the author discusses the weaknesses of the proposed approach and the difficulties of its application in Polish conditions, pointing out, above all, the shortcomings of the approach connected with the underdetermination of variables and the level of analysis, the subjectivity of coding by the method of competent judges and the cultural burden of analyses, as well as the unavailability of data of sufficient detail. The author also shares their experiences in trying to overcome the limitations encountered in the research process. The article concludes by indicating the directions of development of the discussed approach.

Methods of Measuring the Skills Mismatch in the Human Capital Study
(The Ohio State University Libraries in partnership with the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences, 2021) Kocór, Marcin; Czarnik, Szymon; Worek, Barbara; Micek, Dorota; Jelonek, Magdalena; Prokopowicz, Piotr; Górniak, Jarosław; Szczucka, Anna
The analysis of the labour market in terms of available skills, and especially the skills mismatch, has become increasingly important due to potential problems caused by existing asymmetries. Prior to 2010, when data collection for the Human Capital Study was launched, there were no such analytical tools in use in Poland. On the basis of various solutions, we proposed an innovative approach to measuring both skills and skills mismatches, which since has gained wide recognition. In the article, we present this approach along with its extension to measure specific professional skills in specific industries. We discuss its advantages and disadvantages and compare it with other approaches used in this field.
