Life History Studies of Gonometa Podocarpi Aurivillius (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) in East Africa
    (1972-09) Okelo, Ochong
There are two distinct larval generations of Gonometa podocarpi in a year; the first one is between early May to mid-October, and the second one is between the second week in November and the end of April. The last two instars cause the heaviest defoliation. The egg may be parasitized and rendered infertile by a Eupelmid of the genus Anastus. Both the larval and pupal stages of G. podocarpi are killed by Hymenopteran and Dipteran parasites which attack during the former stage. Under experimental conditions, adult moths will not mate unless the males have large enough space in which to fly after emerging from the cocoons. Adult longevity averages eight days for the males and ten days for the females.

A New Species of Agrilus from Arizona (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)
    (1972-09) Knull, Josef N.
A new species, Agrilus heterothecae, collected from the foliage of wild sunflower (Heterotheca sp.) in southern Arizona, is described.

A Lower Devonian (Oriskany) Brachiopod with Color Markings
    (1972-09) Murphy, James L., 1941-
A fragmentary brachial valve identified as Prionothyris? cf. P. ovalis (Hall), from the Oriskany sandstone of Oneida County, New York, retains traces of radial color-markings. It is noteworthy for being the first reported occurrence of color markings in the Family Centronellidae and one of the oldest-known brachiopods with preserved color markings. The fossil is preserved in the U.S. National Museum as no. 170563.

Avian Cholera in a Bald Eagle from Ohio
    (1972-09) Locke, L. N.; Newman, J. A.; Mulhern, B. M.
Avian cholera (Pasteurella multocida) infection was diagnosed in an adult male bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) collected in Ohio. Brain levels of organochlorine pesticides were found to be well below the reported lethal levels; the brain contained 10.7 ppm p,p'-DDE, 0.4 ppm p,p'-DDD, 1.2 ppm dieldrin, 1.1 ppm heptachlor epoxide, and 40.0 ppm polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB).

Yoked Control Versus Random Reinforcement : a Comparison of Experimental Designs
(1972-09) Hoover, Thomas O.; Deitchman, Robert
In verbal-conditioning studies, difficulty has been encountered in providing a control group with noncontingent reinforcement. Because randomly providing reinforcements to controls has proved unsatisfactory, Harmatz and Lapuc (1968) suggested a yoked control paradigm for equating controls with experimentals who were reinforced on a response class. In this study comparing the two methods in a verbal-conditioning paradigm, the yoked control was found to be equivalent to random reinforcement. Reasons for this seemingly contradictory finding are discussed.

Ohio's Burley Tobacco Agriculture : a Primary Regional Cash Crop
    (1972-09) Jencks, W. Robert
Ohio's Burley tobacco agriculture is concentrated in a relatively small portion of southern Ohio and is significant as a primary cash crop for the region. In four of the 10 leading Burley-tobacco-producing counties, Burley tobacco ranks as the leading cultivated crop of the county, and in one county leads all agricultural commodities produced there in value. The type of farm on which Burley tobacco is grown varies from the predominately marginal farms situated in the hilly portions of the growing region to generaltype farms located on more level land. Two crops which have been suggested as possible alternatives or additions to improve the economy of Burley tobacco growers are grapes and strawberries.

The Synthesis and Diazotization of Some Ketone Hydrazones
    (1972-09) Hawbecker, B. L.; Gladon, R. J.; Hitchcock, R. H.; Nordeen, D. H.; Wyles, L. R.
Hydrazones have been synthesized in this study both from a variety of bicyclic ketones and from ketones containing either the 1-naphthyl or 2-naphthyl group. Three of these hydrazones, those derived from 1-acetonaphthone, 2-acetonaphthone, and benzosuberone, have not been reported previously in the literature. All of the hydrazones were allowed to rearrange in a diazotizing medium to produce amide products. One of these, 4,5-benzoai- heptanolactarn, has never been reported in the literature. From the results of this research, it is possible to reaffirm some general conclusions concerning the utility and scope of the hydrazone diazotization-rearrangement. Among these are the facts that the reaction generally functions well only if at least one aromatic ring is present and that it is stereospecific with migration of the group anti to the NH2 group of the original hydrazone. Thus, the assignment of hydrazone isomer configuration appears to be possible on the basis of the identity of the given amide product. Such assignments have been made for the compounds studied here. Some postulations concerning the steric requirements for hydrazone formation with the aromatic bicyclic ketones have also been made.

Airborne Radar Sounding of the Greenland Ice Sheet
    (1972-09) Pawlowicz, Edmund F.
Radar sounding is a technique used in recent years to determine the thickness of ice sheets and glaciers. A radar signal is transmitted through ice, a dielectric, is reflected from the bottom, and is received at some time after its transmission. The length of time which the radar pulse spends in the ice, the so-called "delay time of the pulse," can be related empirically to the thickness of ice sheets and glaciers with a maximum uncertainty of approximately 2 percent without considering errors in positioning, electronics, and other conditions. Airborne radar sounding was used, in 1966, to sound successfully nearly 10,000 km of the Greenland ice sheet, penetrating the ice to a depth of up to 3,000 m. This method is rapid, mobile, and accurate when compared with more conventional techniques and should prove to be a most valuable tool for the study of the thickness of glacial ice.

A Biosystematic Study of Silphium Integrifolium Michaux (Compositae)
(1972-09) Settle, Wilbur Jewell; Fisher, T. Richard
Cytological and chromatographic data indicate that Silphium integrifolium Michx. is a rather homogeneous group of plants. Cytological study shows good pairing during meiosis in interspecific and intraspecific hybrids. Two-dimensional paper chromatography indicates that the varieties of S. integrifolium are more similar to each other than they are to two related species, S. asperrimum and S. speciosum. The varieties of S. integrifolium are chromatographically homogeneous.

Acton Lake : Biology of its Benthos and Notes on its Physical Limnology 1959-1970
    (1972-09) Daniel, Paul M.
Acton Lake is a 253-hectare impoundment located in a heavily used state park in southwestern Ohio. The length from inflow stream to spillway is 4.3 km, the total shoreline length is 13.9 km, the mean depth is 4.3 m and the maximum depth is 10.4 m. Sediment accumulation averaging 0.023 m annually provide a possible useful life of the lake for recreation of about 140 years. The lake stratifies chemically and thermally in the summer. Oxygen depletion occurs at the lower depths in the summer. Chironomids are the most numerous component of the macrobenthic fauna of the whole lake and chaoborids are quite abundant in deeper waters. The wet-weight benthic biomass is greatest in late winter before spring emergence. Funnel trapping has yielded a total of 1400 organisms per square meter for the emergence season from early spring to late fall. Annelids and pelecypods appear to have been increasing in numbers in recent years.
