    Systematics of Unionicola Laurentiana, N.Sp., and U. Nearctica, N. Sp., Sponge-Associated Hydracarina (Parasitengona: Unionicolidae) from North America

    The sponge-associated Hydracarina of North America historically have been considered conspecific with the European species Unionicola crassipes (Miiller 1776). Ratio diagrams based on numerous morphological characteristics distinguish the North American crassipes-like mites from U. crassipes and two North American species are described. Unionicola laurentiana, n.sp., occurs in the Laurentian Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River basins. U. nearctica, n.sp., occurs in that region and its range extends across Canada from Ontario to British Columbia.

    Study of the Remediation of Deficiencies in Auditory Perception

    The screening of 243 students from 10 kindergarten classes resulted in the identification of 39 children with perceptual deficiencies in the auditory channel. Auditory training procedures dictated by Lerner's definition of auditory perception were introduced into 5 kindergarten classes. Five no-treatment classes were included as control groups. Effects of the training program reported for these 39 subjects indicated growth at the meaningful level of language usage and improvement in the ability to analyze words. The effects of the auditory training program on reading readiness and self-concept were encouraging.

    Preservation of Selected Unreclaimed Strip-Mined Lands in Ohio

    Some of the unreclaimed strip-mined lands in Ohio and similar areas of Appalachia constitute a valuable resource for educational, research and recreational purposes. Preservation of natural resources has focused on unique biological and geological resources of the state for inclusion in scenic, interpretive, or scientific preserves. Some of the unreclaimed strip-mined areas constitute unique scenic, scientific, and interpretive resources that could be incorporated into a preserve system, which could be expanded to permit numerous types of recreation suitable for unreclaimed areas. Criteria should be developed for the preservation of some of these unreclaimed areas before the most unique relicts of the Pre-Environmental Age are lost to the numerous reclamation programs now available.

    Changes in the Stability Characteristics of Ohioans' Attitudes Toward Strip Mining, 1970-75

    In 1970, attitudes of the population of Ohio toward strip mining were sampled. Data from the sample indicated 44% of the population had stable attitudes toward strip mining—i.e., their affective and cognitive attitudinal components were consistent. A majority had negative feelings toward the industry. Unstable attitudes were found in 30% of the population with the majority having negative affective and positive cognitive components. In 1975, another sample of attitudes was taken. These data revealed a consistency of attitudinal components in only 30% of the population, and the proportion of the group with positive feelings toward strip mining was equal to that having negative feelings. Unstable attitudes prevailed in 60% of the sample with the majority again revealing negative affective and positive cognitive components. The latter study reveals striking changes occurred in the characteristics of attitudes of Ohioans toward strip mining over the five-year period

    Soils Developed from the Kope Geologic Formation

    Soils formed from the Kope formation of Ordovician Age limestone and soft calcareous shales which occur in southwestern Ohio, southeastern Indiana and northern Kentucky were studied to see whether a new soil series should be established. These soils were developed in different geologic formations which previously were mapped as one series. The 2 areas of concern were the amount of coarse fragments in the soils and the type of clay minerals in the clay fraction. These soils contained less than 35% by volume of coarse fragments in the control section, therefore would not belong in a skeletal family as previously classified. Clay mineralogy was mixed, with no one clay mineral dominant in the clay fraction. Kope formation soils classify as members of the fine, mixed, mesic Typic Hapludalfs and are now mapped as the Pate series.

    Mineral Composition, Sr/Sr Ratios, and Concentrations of Strontium and Rubidium in Late Wisconsin Till of Ohio

    Samples of Late Wisconsin till from the Powell-Union City Moraine of Ohio have bimodal grainsize distributions and concentrations of carbonate minerals, illite, and kaolinite-chlorite that are primarily the result of grinding of clasts derived from local bedrock. Quartz and feldspar have unimodal grainsize distributions that suggest their derivation from distant sources on the Precambrian Shield of Canada. The carbonate content of the silt and clay fractions (<62.5jum) of 13 till samples collected along the Powell-Union City Moraine increases from less than 10% in the east to about 35% in western Ohio. The change in carbonate content is compatible with bedrock lithology and a southwesterly iceflow direction. The silt and clay fractions (non-carbonate) contain Rb= 154.7=*= 13.5 ppm, Sr= 104.8 ±11.0 ppm, Rb/Sr = 1.49±0.21, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7345±0.0041. The average 87Sr/86Sr ratio of these till samples is similar to results obtained elsewhere for strontium of the continental crust and supports previous suggestions that the average 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the continental crust is 0.730±0.010. The ratio of radiogenic 87Sr/87Rb increases from about 0.0060 in the east to 0.0075 in western Ohio. The low magnitude of this ratio is due to the predominance of locally derived sediment of Palezoic age in the silt and clay fractions of till. The westerly increase is probably the result of several factors, including: 1) Increasing age of the Precambrian component (feldspar); 2) Increasing abundance of the Precambrian component; 3) Increasing age of the local bedrock from Mississippian in the east to Silurian in western Ohio.
