Item Interview of Dianne and Harold Campbell by McKenna Dunn and Daisy Roberts(Ohio State University Archives, 2024) Campbell, Dianne; Campbell, HaroldDianne and Harold Campbell discuss their time at Ohio State as students and members of the Black Student Union. This interview was one of 15 conducted by students in English 4567 (Rhetoric and Community Service) to capture as many stories as possible from former Ohio State students associated with the 1968 sit-in at the Administration Building (now Bricker Hall) that led to the arrests of 34 Black students, now known as the “OSU 34.” In addition to their experiences related to the sit-in, the Campbells also describe the tight-knit nature of the Black community on campus and how the Black Student Union was a conduit for that closeness. They also discuss how the sit-in affected campus in the long term. In particular, Henry describes her experience in 1968 as one of four Black women asked to leave a campus bus, an incident that led to a sit-in by BSU members and others in the Administration Building. Henry’s interview is one of 15 gathered by students in English 4567 (Rhetoric and Community Service) to capture as many stories as possible from former Ohio State students associated with the 1968 sit-in at the Administration Building (now Bricker Hall) that led to the arrests of 34 Black students, now known as the “OSU 34.” In addition to her experiences related to the sit-in, Henry also describes her relationship with the University after her graduation in 1971, and how that changed in 2018 with the 50th anniversary of the sit-in. She discusses her recollections of the Black Student Union, the Black student newspaper, “Our Choking Times,” her election as May Queen, and life on campus as a Black student in general at that time. She also discusses her life after she graduated, particularly her role in the formation of the OSU Black Alumni Society. In addition, he recalls his experience facing much more blatant racism at University of Texas at El Paso, which he attended for a semester his freshman year before transferring to Ohio State.
