Abstract:	The theory of n-$\pi$ transitions in azabenzenes is discussed and it is shown that simple molecular orbital treatments using the orbitals of the ground state are not adequate to describe the upper state. A different approach is suggested and the characteristic properties of the n-$\pi$ transitions are interpreted in terms of this approach.
