A New Species of Rugosana (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) from Mexico
    (1973-05) DeLong, Dwight M.; Freytag, Paul H.
The genus Rugosana was described by DeLong in 1942 (p. 64) and 11 species were placed in the genus. DeLong and Freytag revised the genus in 1964 (p. 123) and described or redescribed and illustrated 18 known species of Rugosana. No further additions have been made to the present time. This new species was collected by the junior author and L. P. Gibson near Toluca, Mexico.

A Device for Laboratory Measurement of Dip Direction of Small-Scale Planar Structures in Rocks
(1973-05) Griesemer, Allan David; Singler, Charles R.
Dip direction of inclined small-scale planar structures, not recognizable until rock specimens are sectioned in the laboratory, can be determined with an easily constructed device. The method is based on a rotating transparent compass suspended above a platform on which the sample is oriented. With at least two vertical cuts through the same structure in the sample, points of equal elevation can be measured. A line connecting these points represents the strike of the structure; therefore, when the sample is positioned so that this line parallels one pair of opposing horizontal support rods, the alternate horizontal rods indicate the azimuth of inclination, which can be read directly from the overlying compass.

Food Habits of Bullfrogs in Northwest Ohio
    (1973-05) Bruggers, Richard L.
The stomach contents of 132 bullfrogs, Rana catesbeiana Shaw, collected monthly from July 1970 to June 1971, were identified and quantified. Members of 16 invertebrate and five vertebrate orders were observed. Of these orders, insects (nine orders) and crayfish were the most frequently observed food items. Snails, turtles, small rodents, salamanders, and fish also were present. No vertebrate or crayfish remains were observed in frogs weighing less than 50 g. Seasonal variation in foods taken, especially in regard to the insect orders, was apparent, with utilization seeming to parallel availability; 20 percent more families of all food organisms were found in spring diets than in those of other seasons. Findings appeared to demonstrate the bullfrog to be an opportunistic predator.

A Large Tillite Erratic, Originallly Described by J.E. Hyde, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio
    (1973-05) Murphy, James L., 1941-
An unusually large glacial erratic, believed to be of Gowganda Tillite, has been rediscovered in May field Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Originally described and photographed by J. E. Hyde in 1936, the boulder is considerably larger than any previously reported Precambrian tillite erratics (White, 1939) from Ohio.

Studies of the Gyponinae (Homoptera: Cicadellidae): Six New Species of Ponana from Central and South America
(1973-05) DeLong, Dwight M.; Martinson, Candace
Six new species of Ponana, P. hilara n. sp., P. panera n. sp., P. sena n. sp., P. seresa n. sp., P. serrella n. sp., and P. tabula n. sp., are described. Three species, P. sena, P. seresa, and P. tabula, are from Guatemala; P. panera was collected in Mexico; and P. hilara and P. serella are from Peru.

Sr/Sr Ratios and Total Strontium Concentrations in Surface Waters of the Scioto River Drainage Basin, Ohio
(1973-05) Curtis, John B., Jr.; Stueber, Alan M.
A total of 23 water samples from the Scioto River and its tributaries has been analyzed for total strontium concentrations and strontium-isotopic compositions in order to investigate the nature of strontium in surface waters of the Scioto River drainage basin, Ohio. Total Sr concentrations were quite variable and, in the northern portion of the basin, they were unusually high compared to most North American rivers, probably due to weathering of celestite in the Silurian carbonate bedrock and overlying glacial till.

Habitat Distribution of the Shore Flies of Northeastern Ohio (Diptera: Ephydridae)
    (1973-05) Scheiring, Joseph F.; Foote, Benjamin A.
A study of the habitat distribution of 68 species of shore flies (Ephydridae) was carried out in northeastern Ohio between April of 1968 and November of 1969. Ten ephydrid habitats were recognized: mud-shore, sand-shore, grass-shore, limnic-wrack, marsh-reed, sedge-meadow, floating-vegetation, floating-algal-mat, rain-pool, and salt-pool habitats. The mud shore contained the greatest diversity of Ephydridae, whereas the salt-pool habitat produced the largest populations. The floating algal mat possessed the fewest number of species, as well as the least number of individuals.

Benthic Macroinvertebrates as Indexes of Water Quality in Whetstone Creek, Morrow County, Ohio (Scioto River Basin)
    (1973-05) Olive, John H.; Dambach, Charles A.
During the summer of 1966, Whetstone Creek, a tributary of the Olentangy River in central Ohio, received (1) domestic wastes from a secondary sewage-treatment plant at Mt. Gilead, (2) septic-tank drainage near Cardington, (3) brines from oil-field operations between Mt. Gilead and Cardington, and (4) stormwater runoff from agricultural lands. Dissolved-oxygen levels as low as 4.3 ppm and total-phosphate concentrations as high as 4.2 ppm were noted 1 km below Mt. Gilead. Chlorides ranging from 105-270 ppm were recorded in the stream between Mt. Gilead and the Delaware Reservoir.
