Abstract

The $H_{2}$ 4-0 S(1) observations of Brault and Smith $^{1}$ have led us to undertake a more complete study of the vibrational-rotational transitions in an effort to quantify the line shape in the regime of collision-narrowing. High resolution, high S/N spectra were obtained for the 1-0 through 4-0 bands at many rotational levels, and for several pressures. Observed profiles were analyzed in terms of the Calatry function. Such fits have allowed accurate determinations of the line positions and strengths to be made, and improved values of the molecular constants for hydrogen have been calculated. Now pressure broadening coefficients have been determined, indicating that the coefficient is a function of vibrational level and considerably larger than previously believed. The inter-collisional interference effect has been observed for both the Q and S branches of the 1-0 band. Results of the preliminary analysis are discussed.
