Abstract

The reaction of Mg and ozone in inert gas matrices at $14^{\circ}\, K$ has been studied. Isotopic substitution of both Mg and $O_{3}$ aided identification of infrared absorptions due to MgO, $MgO_{2}$ and $MgO_{3}$. Infrared and Raman spectra have been observed for the corresponding reactions of ozone with Cd and Zn. Isotopic substitution of $O_{3}$ in reactions with Zn and Cd aided identification of analogous species with these metals. Comparison of previously investigated alkali metal and alkaline earth-ozone reactions indicate a dependence of product yield on the particular metal, and of ozonide structure and stability on cation size. Similar comparison will be made with the Zn and Cd products.
