Randy Smith presented the proposal from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering to rename its graduate program from Computer and Information Science to Computer Science and Engineering and the proposal for policies and procedures for approving and listing designated service learning courses. Professor Golden Jackson-Mergler discussed this proposal with the Council. The meeting concluded with the election of Halasek as Chair and Smith as Vice Chair for the 2007-2008 term.

Randy Smith led the discussions on the proposals to create a Video Art minor, to establish Communication Technology minor, Organizational Communication minor, and Media and Society minor. There was also continued discussion on Centers/Institute Guidelines and the draft was decided to be close to being reviewed by the Rules Committee.

This is the minutes for the Council on Academic Affairs' meeting on May 22, 2007. Brian L. Winer and W. Randy Smith (the Chair and Vice Chair, respectively) gave comments regarding relevant updates and led the continued discussion of the Report of the Committee on the University-Wide Review of Undergraduate Education. The Council discussed the drafts of Council Resolutions. The core of each resolution is as follows: Resolution #1: The new University-Level Advisory Committee on the General Education Curriculum (GEC) to monitor and evaluate the student-selected courses in the Breadth categories; specifically to monitor the breath of education that students obtain. Resolution #2: CAA has requested that the Arts and Sciences Committee on Curriculum and Instructions develop a mechanism for using middle to upper-level courses to fulfill GEC requirements. Resolution #3: CAA has requested that the GEC templates for each college be organized in such a fashion that they are as clear as possible and contain all the information necessary for students to navigate through the choices. Resolution #4: CAA has suspended the implementation of the new GEC templates for colleges that have not yet completed the investigation of an additional 5 credit hour reduction outside the GEC. Implementation of new GEC would not go forward until the issue of the additional 5 credit hours in cuts from the major or electives is "addressed to the satisfaction of CAA."
