Food of yellow perch {Perca flavescens), freshwater drum (A plodinotus grunniens), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), and white bass (M or one chrysops) collected from Sandusky Bay in 1971-72 were recorded and seasonal changes noted. Perch and drum rely on aquatic insect larvae, zooplankton and fish. Catfish were omnivorous feeding on a variety of dipterans, fish and cladocerans. The white bass were generally piscivorous. Each species ate seasonally distinct food based on availability.

<description>Records of the Greenside Darter, Etheostoma Blennioides from the Susquehanna River Drainage in Pennsylvania

A population of the greenside darter, Etheostoma blennioides Rafinesque, is recorded for the first time from the Susquehanna River drainage. Meristics are significantly different from populations in the adjacent Allegheny and upper Genesee drainages for dorsal rays and least caudal peduncle scales. Taxonomic comparison places it in the subspecies E. b. blennioides. The population is believed to have entered the Susquehanna drainage via stream capture from the Allegheny. Its presence until now has been undetected because emphasis on taxonomic-distributional research has centered in other geographic areas.

Assays on cell-free homogenates of Acanthamoeba castellanii reveal that the three hydrolases, acid phosphatase (APase), acid deoxyribonuclease, and acid ribonuclease (RNase), possess pH optima of 5.0, 4.8, and 5.2, respectively. These enzymes exhibit an enhanced sedimentation at 20,000 x g when sucrose is in the homogenizing buffer. Treatment of homogenates with Triton X-100 increases total enzyme activity. These results suggest that the enzymes are particle-bound in lysosomes. During encystment there is a differential decrease in the activity per cell of all three enzymes, with RNase decreasing most rapidly and APase least rapidly. The specific activity of APase increases during encystment even though its activity per cell gradually decreases.

Parameters and techniques used to characterize avian eggshells are reviewed. Elongation, volume and thickness indices were calculated to estimate the shape and size of 1145 eggs (328 sets) representing 18 orders, 54 families and 253 species of the Clark K. Lloyd Collection at Miami U., Oxford, Ohio. The study includes eggs of species from 13 countries and 37 states collected prior to the widespread use of pesticides. Fifty four species came from Ohio and 43 from California. Sixteen species are considered rare or endangered, or have declining populations. A comparison of egg volumes as determined by Paganelli et al (1974) was made and differences ranged from 0.7% to 22%.

A review of ornithological and early travelers' reports of the Carolina parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis) in Ohio shows some long-standing claims to be unconvincing. This applies to Audubon (Lake Erie at the mouth of the Maumee), Moselcy (near Sandusky), Langdon (a lone claim of breeding near Cincinnati). There appear to be reliable northerly reports for the species from Tuscarawas and Summit Counties westward to Miami County and southward to the middle and lower Ohio valley. Records for southeastern Ohio counties along the Ohio are scarce. A Cleveland specimen (ca. 1863) can probably be ignored, while a late report of a flock at Columbus in 1862 probably warrants more confidence.
